This week, I’m comparing The Jordan Challenge in NBA 2K11 to NBA’s Greatest in NBA 2K12.I like to mix things up here in Wayback Wednesday. From retrospective reviews and profiles of modes and features, to interesting trivia and media from yesteryear, it’s my goal to cover a broad range of throwback content. Something that I haven’t done yet is to directly compare a couple of retro games, modes, or features, and conclude which one is superior. That changes today with what will hopefully be the first of many “Versus” articles for Wayback Wednesday, as I’m comparing The Jordan Challenge to NBA’s Greatest.I’ve covered both and in several articles for Wayback Wednesday, but the question remains: which is the superior mode? Both modes took NBA 2K’s retro content to a new level, providing some fun challenges and establishing a precedent for all future releases as far as including a variety of historical teams.

Let’s compare these two great modes across some key criteria as we take a look backway back. This is Wayback Wednesday, your midweek blast from the past! This week, I’m reimagining NBA’s Greatest in NBA 2K12.I had a lot of fun reimagining back in June, so I thought I’d give the same treatment to NBA’s Greatest. As I remarked in my on NBA’s Greatest, it was a fantastic follow-up to The Jordan Challenge, and added new content to NBA 2K12 with the lockout of 2011 delaying the inclusion of the new rookies and updated rosters.

The level of detail with the retro presentation was very impressive, and it’s a feature that would be really fun to have when playing with historical teams in future NBA 2K games. However, as with The Jordan Challenge, NBA’s Greatest wasn’t perfect. Looking back, there are a few ways it could’ve been better, and teams that would’ve been preferable. As with my previous reimagining, this isn’t intended to disparage the work that Visual Concepts put into NBA’s Greatest, but rather consider what might have been if not for a few legal barriers, and how an already fantastic mode could be made even better. This week, I’m taking a look back at Training Camp in NBA 2K12.In recent years, it’s been noted that the NBA 2K series has been increasingly geared towards appealing to the hardcore online crowd. In a that I’ve mentioned before (and no doubt will again), a former EVE Online developer has noted the series’ increasing focus on catering to elite players, and apparent hostility to newer gamers who are trying to hone their skills on the virtual hardwood. It’s fostered the “get gud” mindset, while failing to provide the onboarding, opportunities, and fair matchmaking that would allow less experienced players to strive for that.As noted in that Reddit post, it wasn’t always that way. Earlier this decade, the NBA 2K games were going out of their way to teach gamers all of the basic and advanced controls, in an environment that was both helpful and creative.

Those efforts began with the introduction of Training Camp in NBA 2K12, a feature that would carry over into NBA 2K13 and prior gen NBA 2K14. Let’s take a look backway back. This week, I’m taking a look back at the history of the Ultimate Base Roster, through an interview with HAWK23 himself. The Ultimate Base Roster, also known as UBR, began as a roster update for that also expanded upon the game’s historical content. Over time, it grew into a comprehensive modding project that not only kept NBA 2K12 up to date, but allowed basketball gamers to step back into the past with multiple complete season mods and other fun content. The project would later be adapted for, a release that has received an update just. Gamers have been enjoying UBR for years now, and it’s even encouraged long-time console users to pick up the PC versions.Want to know more about the history of the mod, and what it’s been like to maintain it for all these years?

Check out my interview with UBR creator HAWK23, as we take a look backway back. Outstanding news for everyone still playing NBA 2K12 or NBA 2K14: the for the Ultimate Base Roster is back online! This is obviously fantastic news, as not only will the previous season mods be available, but there’ll be brand new rosters for NBA 2K14 as well. It’s been since the last UBR update, and from the reaction in our Forum, gamers are really looking forward to the forthcoming one.You can find the topic for UBR 2K12, and the UBR 2K14 topic in the NLSC Forum. This week, I’m taking a look back at the introduction video for NBA 2K12.Although NBA 2K11 was a tough act to follow, I would suggest that NBA 2K12 was up to the challenge. Continuing to improve upon the gameplay of its predecessor, it also successfully expanded the historical content we’ve come to associate with the NBA 2K series. The gave way to, a mode featuring fantastic production values and several of the best teams in the NBA history on top of MJ’s Bulls. The game was hampered by the absence of the Class of 2011 rookies at launch owing to the lockout, but official roster updates would later resolve that issue.Firing up NBA 2K12 for the first time immediately got you in the mood to play with the new historical teams, with an introduction video that I as the best among basketball games. Although we’ve seen some slick intros in the years since, there’s still a strong case for NBA 2K12’s boot-up remaining in the top spot. As such, I thought I’d look back at it this week, and the real highlights that inspired several moments in the intro.

This week, I’m opening up a sealed promotional copy of NBA 2K12 for Xbox 360 that I found on eBay.In recent years I’ve continued to expand my of basketball video games, not only buying the latest releases, but also picking up older games that I’ve found on eBay at an affordable price. Some of those games I’ve previously owned and sold, while others I’ve never owned or even played before.

I’ve also bought different versions of games that I already own, in order to experience them on other platforms. While browsing eBay looking for deals, I found a sealed, promotional copy of NBA 2K12 for the Xbox 360. Intrigued as to what might be in the box – perhaps a code for the 2002 Sacramento Kings and 1991 Golden State Warriors?

– I decided to pick it up.Since I was going to have to tear open the seal anyway in order to check it out, I figured that I might as well make a sort of unboxing video feature out of it. This week, I’m taking a look back at the infamous 2K Insider. When I discussed some of the most in basketball video games, it was pointed out to me that I’d forgotten about one of the most noteworthy individuals to appear in the NBA 2K series: the 2K Insider. A mysterious person behind the scenes and in the community, the 2K Insider – known only as “Sy” – was responsible for maintaining the rosters for NBA 2K. Within the games themselves, their avatar appeared as an advisor and mentor, providing basketball insights and offering up words of encouragement, as well as critique. The 2K Insider hasn’t been a part of the more recent NBA 2K games, as he no longer fits the tone of MyCAREER. 2K has also taken the approach of recognising all the developers, ensuring that we know who is responsible for different aspects of the games, and opening up the channels of communication for constructive feedback.

The Insider was a notable figure that led to a fair amount of speculation though, so let’s take a look backway back. This is Wayback Wednesday, your midweek blast from the past! This week, I’m taking a look back at the 1991 Golden State Warriors and 2002 Sacramento Kings in NBA 2K12.As I discussed in a Wayback Wednesday retrospective, the success of the Jordan Challenge in NBA 2K11 and the looming lockout in 2011 gave Visual Concepts plenty of incentive to expand upon the historical content in the game. The result of course was NBA’s Greatest, which cut down on the specifics of the challenges (just win the games), but provided us with a larger roster of historical teams and NBA Legends. Deciding to take things one step further, 2K also provided basketball gamers with a couple of other historical teams to play with: the 1991 Golden State Warriors, and the 2002 Sacramento Kings.Given the popularity and reputation of those two teams, the announcement of their inclusion was greeted with enthusiasm. However, their presence in the game wasn’t without controversy. Let’s take a look backway back.

NBA 2K13 is a basketballvideo game developed by Visual Concepts and published by 2K Sports. It was released on October 2, 2012 in North America for the Xbox 360, PlayStation Portable, PlayStation 3, Microsoft Windows and Wii. A version for the Wii U was also released as a launch title in North America, and in December for the PAL region. Kevin Durant of the Oklahoma City Thunder, Blake Griffin of the Los Angeles Clippers and Derrick Rose of the Chicago Bulls are the cover athletes, and they are all shown in dunking positions.[1]NBA 2K13 is the successor to NBA 2K12, succeeded by NBA 2K14 in the NBA 2K series and is the fourteenth installment in the 2K series. The game was executive produced by rapper Jay-Z, who designed the game and curated its soundtrack. It is also the last NBA 2K game to be released on the Wii and PlayStation Portable, the only installment available on the Wii U and the last to be available on pure handheld systems.

Development[edit]

Around mid-June 2012, 2K Sports announced a 'Uncover the Cover' where the more tweets #NBA2K13 got the more clues would be revealed about the cover athletes. 2K also announced NBA 2K13's compatibility with Kinect for the Xbox 360. Two of the legends from NBA 2K12 have been removed: Julius Erving and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. On May 3, 2012, 2K Sports announced that as a bonus for pre-ordering the game, buyers would receive downloadable content for an All Star Weekend, which would feature the Slam Dunk Contest, Three Point Contest, Rising Stars Challenge, and the NBA All Star Game.[2] Also a shoe creator was developed, with Nike, Jordan, Adidas, Spalding, Reebok, Converse, Under Armour, and generic shoes available to create and edit.[3]

Rapper Jay-Z serves as executive producer of the game. He has been credited with the idea of having both the 1992 and 2012United States men's national basketball teams in the game.[4] Additionally, he appeared in an introduction, picked songs for the game's soundtrack and contributed to the design of its in-game menus 'and other visual elements'.[5][6]

Initially, Scottie Pippen was left out of the game due to the inability to secure use of his likeness. However, after widespread disappointment from fans over his absence, he was then added to the team roster.[7]

The soundtrack was announced in August 2012 including songs from Jay-Z and artists like Nas, Kanye West and U2.[8]

In 2013 2K added NBA 2K13 Lite (in addition to the previously release NBA 2K13) to the iOS platform.[9] This version of the NBA 2K series of games is free, and appears to be a cut down/demonstration version of the full NBA 2K13 iOS title.

On September 28, 2013, The Release updated 2K13 and 2K14 versions from the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.[citation needed]

Two days before the October 2nd release, 2K Sports announced via a reply to a fan on Twitter that the downloadable PC version was delayed to October 16.[10] The release date on Amazon was subsequently changed to October 30.[11] The game was also distributed as a limited disc-based release and was found to have been missing some key features from the console versions. Within 24 hours of going on sale, the game sold 9.5 million copies in the U.S. Online matchmaking with friends is unavailable and 'Blacktop 3 vs 3', and 'MyTEAMs' modes have been removed. The game's virtual currency system and the features associated with the currency system (such as unlockable Blacktop Stars and MyCLOSET) have not ported over from the console versions. In addition, advanced lighting features available on consoles, such as self-shadowing are also unavailable.[12] Custom soundtracks and DLC (including pre-order DLC) have been excluded as well. The PC version can be modified with new player faces, arenas and courts, jerseys and tools which allow you to clone real NBA players into My Career mode.[citation needed]

Reception[edit]

NBA 2K13 has received generally favorable reviews and has a Metacritic score of 88 out of 100. IGN gave it a 9.4 out of 10 and said that 'Even when left with a clear, unobstructed path to the basket, 2K13 throws down a monster jam with this year's edition,' and that 'It's obviously the best hoops game out there, and it might even be the best sports game of all, period.'[13]GameSpot scored the game a 9.4 of 10 saying that 'Enhanced realism and a great new control setup make NBA 2K13 a fantastic recreation of pro hoops.'[14]Game Revolution gave the game a 4.5 out of 5 and said that, 'There is no doubt that NBA 2K13 is one for the ages. Without any other true competitors to stand in its way, the sky is the limit. If you haven't already picked up a copy, you are sorely missing out. I can't ever truly say if a game is worth $60, but with this one, it might be worth even more.'[15]GameTrailers gave it a 9.4 out of 10.

However, Joystiq and GamesRadar gave the game mixed reviews. Both publications lauded the game's on-court experience, while criticizing the game modes. Joystiq called the My Career and My Team modes 'uninspired and lazy'[16] while GamesRadar lamented the absence of the Jordan and Greatest challenges modes from previous installments.[17]
