The Munchables Wii

I'll be honest: any game with 'Munchables' in the title is pretty much an instant win for me. Although I have an equal fascination with 'delicious,' 'delectable' and 'mouth-watering,' was still on my radar when I attended Namco Bandai's press event last night in San Francisco. The game, designed exclusively for the Wii, is a cute, colorful platformer that combines themes from both Pac-Man and Katamari Damacy to create a charming little number.

Although my hands-on time with the game was limited, I was fairly pleased with what I saw.stars two hungry little heroes: Chomper and Munchy. The characters will traverse a set of eight levels in an attempt to save the world from Don Onion and his evil legion of space pirates. Sounds awesome already, right? The purpose of the Munchables is to eat your enemies and grow in level/size. You can eat anything that's a lower level than you are.

Anything higher can be broken down into smaller pieces with a well-timed headbutt. Controlling Chomper (or Munchy) is pretty easy. Use the analog stick to move around and press the A button to chomp away. Hitting the B button will cause your character to spiral forward with the aforementioned headbutt, while flicking up on the Wii Remote will cause you to jump. Most of the game is themed around food, which adds to the overall charm. Even the bosses are food-based, like the massive Brocco-Li, an anthropomorphic broccoli stem with a mean right hook.

You might think I'm joking, but I'm not. This game is pretty crazy. At the end of a level, you'll proceed to digest all your food and excrete a series of shiny Easter eggs. Don't ask me how this works - Chomper is just a serious badass. Fortunately, a second player can join in on the fun and help you target enemies during the single-player game, similar to how friends could help you out in Mario Galaxy. The Munchables is due out on May 26th and should provide players with a solid 20 hours of platforming, puzzle-solving and eating.

I can only hope that Chomper and Munchy will be victorious over the space pirates.
